Shelia Baudains

Welcome to Jersey Naturally

Hi, my name is Sheila Baudains and I have been interested in photography since the age of about 14.  I worked as a Police Officer in Jersey for 17 years and during that time was a Scenes of Crime Officer where I obtained training in photography. Following an accident at work I was medically retired nearly six years ago and told by the specialists that I must not work, and had to sit down or lie down all day. When I started looking forward to soaps at lunchtime I knew I had to do something to keep my mind active and turned to my hobby of photography.

Initially I went to our local country life museum Hamptonne where I would sit amongst the animals taking photographs and talking to the visitors. I loved it. I was soon asked to sell my images in the shop there and from there thought I could sell images at markets fairs, fetes etc. I have never looked back.

I am often seen around Jersey hobbling on my crutches, which converts quite nicely into a mobile tripod and now have a huge selection of local images. If I don’t have an image of a particular area it’s because I can’t get the car close enough for me to walk to with the crutches!

The hardest part, although the most enjoyable part has been selling my images at the markets etc., but I soon realised why I have been told not to do anything because of the amount of pain I am in.

Jersey Scenes
All of the following images create a journey around the beautiful Island of Jersey. Some are easily recognisable such as Gorey Castle, Corbiere Lighthouse etc., but others are just my favourite places   Oops that the whole Island. With tides changing and light never the same it is impossible to grow tired of photographing the Island.

Animals

I always have my camera with me and love to take images of animals. The looks on their faces usually give me the title for the images, especially my two naughty girls in ‘Sorry Can We Come Back In?’ and as for the hens -  well don’t you know someone like that?

Flowers.

Flowers are difficult to photograph. I like to take them in their natural setting and I don’t like to pick them, so have to rely on the natural light and surroundings, I will move the odd twig but that is all.
